Modified Horner-System for Bible Reading

Prof. Grant Horner’s Bible-reading system divides the 66 books of the Bible into 10 groups and assigns 10 chapters — one chapter from each group — per day. In the original Horner system Acts comprises a single group. I prefer to group Acts, Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews together as these books are important in understanding the unity of the old and the new testament church, in Christ, who is the surety of the Covenant of Grace. So here is the modified Horner-system that I use:

  1. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John (89 chapters)
  2. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy (187 chapters)
  3. I&II Cor, Gal, Eph, Phil, Col, I&II Thess (51 chapters)
  4. I&II Tim, Titus, Philemon, James, I&II Peter, I,II&III John, Jude, Revelation (57 chapters)
  5. Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon (62 chapters)
  6. Psalms (150 psalms)
  7. Proverbs (31 chapters)
  8. Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I&II Samuel, I&II Kings, I&II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther (249 chapters)
  9. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi (250 chapters)
  10. Acts, Romans, Galatians, Hebrews (63 chapters)

I prefer to sing the psalms than to read, for which the Book of Psalms for Worship is very good.

I use ReadingPlan for iPhone/iPad to keep track of my reading. For that I had to create an ini-file and import it using iTunes. (For the instruction on how to import a custom plan, follow this link.) Here is the ini-file for the first year: Modified Horner-system 1 (Please change the file extension to .ini after downloading it; somehow WordPress does not allow uploading files with .txt extension, so I had to change the extension to .doc.)
