지성이면 감천(至誠感天)했던 것이 언제였나 When did God help those who help themselves?

‘지성이면 감천이라’는 말을 안 들어본 사람 없을 것이다. 영어 속담에도 비슷한 것으로 “God helps those who help themselves”라는 말이 있다. 참으로 세상에 널리 퍼진 생각이다.

하지만 이것은 하나님 나라와는 대척적이다. 우리가 진심으로 회개하고, 열심으로 기도하고, 전심으로 찬송하고, 선을 위해 각고면려한다 해도, 그 어느 것 하나 하나님께서 가납하실 만한 것이 되지 못한다.

“무릇 우리는 다 부정한 자 같아서 우리의 의는 다 더러운 옷 같으며 우리는 다 잎사귀 같이 시들므로 우리의 죄악이 바람 같이 우리를 몰아가나이다”

이사야 64:6

자신에게 하나님께서 인정하실 그 무엇도 없으며 만들어 낼 수도 없다는 빈곤함과, 하나님의 법을 훼손한 것, 그리고 그에 대한 공의로운 심판은 영벌을 요구한다는 것들을 자각하고 슬퍼하는 것이 하나님 나라의 첫걸음이다.

“심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이요, 애통하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 위로를 받을 것임이요”

마태복음 5:3-4

하지만 세상은 말할 것도 없고 기독교 내에서도 ‘당신에겐 하나님께서 가상하다고 인정하실 부분이 있다’는 식의 ‘위로신학’이라고 할런지 혹은 feel-good-theology 라고 부를 사상을 심심찮게 만날 수 있다. ‘이런 진실한 마음을 하나님은 알아주시겠지’ 혹은 ‘내 잘못은 영벌에 해당 되지는 않는다’는 것이 비슷한 생각들이다. 성경으로 뒷받침할 수 없는 신학이다. 성경은 말한다:

“여호와께서 사람의 죄악이 세상에 가득함과 그의 마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐임을 보시고” (창세기 6:5)

“사람의 마음의 계획하는 바가 어려서부터 악함이라” (창세기 8:21) 

“만물보다 거짓되고 심히 부패한 것은 마음이라 누가 능히 이를 알리요마는” (예레미아 17:9)

“내가 내 마음을 정하게 하였다 내 죄를 깨끗하게 하였다 할 자가 누구냐” (잠언 20:9) 

“누가 깨끗한 것을 더러운 것 가운데에서 낼 수 있으리이까 하나도 없나이다” (욥기 14:4)

“전에는 우리도 다 그 가운데서 우리 육체의 욕심을 따라 지내며 육체와 마음의 원하는 것을 하여 다른 이들과 같이 본질상 진노의 자녀이었더니” (에베소서 2:3)

“육신의 생각은 하나님과 원수가 되나니 이는 하나님의 법에 굴복하지 아니할 뿐 아니라 할 수도 없음이라” (로마서 8:7)

“하나님을 모르는 자들과 우리 주 예수의 복음에 복종하지 않는 자들에게 형벌을 내리시리니 이런 자들은 주의 얼굴과 그의 힘의 영광을 떠나 영원한 멸망의 형벌을 받으리로다” (데살로니가후서 1:8-9)

우리 각자는 예수 그리스도의 속죄의 피가 묻지 않아도 될 부분이 한 군데도 없는 것이다. 참으로 그리스도는 하나님 앞에서 아무 것도 없는 자들의 부유함이 되시고, 또 하나님 앞에서 애통하는 자들의 위로가 되신다:

“우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라” (로마서 5:8)

“미쁘다 모든 사람이 받을 만한 이 말이여 그리스도 예수께서 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다 하였도다” (디모데전서 1:15)

“사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 속하기 위하여 화목 제물로 그 아들을 보내셨음이라” (요한1서 4:10)

“제사와 예물과 번제와 속죄제는 원하지도 아니하고 기뻐하지도 아니하신다 하셨고 […] 이 뜻을 따라 예수 그리스도의 몸을 단번에 드리심으로 말미암아 우리가 거룩함을 얻었노라 [….] 오직 그리스도는 죄를 위하여 한 영원한 제사를 드리시고 하나님 우편에 앉으사 그 후에 자기 원수들을 자기 발등상이 되게 하실 때까지 기다리시나니 그가 거룩하게 된 자들을 한 번의 제사로 영원히 온전하게 하셨느니라” (히브리서 10:8-14)

하늘을 감동시키고 인정 받은 사람은 예수 그리스도 한 분 뿐이다 (마태복음 3:17 참조). 그 결과 죽음에서 일으키심을 받아 천상천하의 대권을 받으셨고, 영광의 보좌 우편에 앉아 계신다. 그에게 피하는 것이 사람이 마땅히 취해야 할 가장 겸손한 자세이다.

여호와를 경외함으로 섬기고
떨며 즐거워할지어다
그의 아들에게 입맞추라
그렇지 아니하면 진노하심으로 너희가 길에서 망하리니
그의 진노가 급하심이라
여호와께 피하는 모든 사람은 다 복이 있도다

시편 2:11-12

“A sincere effort will move the heaven.” This is an old saying well-known to many Koreans. I find it similar to the English maxim “God helps those who help themselves.” It is an idea commonly found around the world.

But this idea is in opposition to the Kingdom of God. Our sincere repentance, earnest prayer, passionate praise, arduous effort for good — anything we do is not decent enough for God to accept it.

“We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

Isaiah 64:6

That there is nothing in us that can be approved by God, nor can we ever come up with any, and that we have trampled God’s law, for which the righteous judgement demands eternal damnation — acknowledging and weeping for such absolute poverty of righteousness is the first step toward the Kingdom of God.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Matthew 5:3-4

But it is not hard to encounter in Christian culture (not to mention the world) messages such as ‘We have something that God thinks highly of’. Similar are ‘God knows that my heart is sincere’ or ‘My faults do not deserve eternal punishment’. Such feel-good-theology cannot be supported by the Scriptures. Bible speaks:

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5)

“for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Genesis 8:21) 

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

“Who can say,’I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin’?” (Proverbs 20:9) 

“Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one.” (Job 14:4)

“among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” (Ephesians 2:3)

“For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.” (Romans 8:7)

“when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

There is not a single part in us that does not need to be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. Indeed, Christ is the richness and comfort for the deprived and sorrowful in the presence of God:

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15)

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)

“When he said above, ‘You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings’ […] then he added, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will.’ […] by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. […] But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:8-14)

There is only on man who moved the Heaven and was acknowledged — Jesus Christ (cf. Matthew 3:17). For that he was raised from the dead, received all authority in heaven and on earth, and sits on the right hand of the throne of glory. Fleeing to him is the most humble attitude every man should take.

Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
